Avid Upgrade and Studio Migration

The Project:

Hyperactive Broadcast won a competitive tender not only to replace ITV Creative’s entire Avid Interplay and Avid Media Central system, but also to relocate its production setup to new premises across the river in London.

This is because ITV Broadcast has moved from its famous studios on the capital’s South Bank to new office space on Gray’s Inn Road, Holborn, while the South Bank site is being redeveloped.

The Approach:

ITV’s decision to use Hyperactive came down to our reputation for outstanding technical excellence and our attention to the finer details necessary to successfully accomplish the migration.

On appointment, we immediately began interrogating the ITV system, to identify the exact system specifications across all of ITV Creative’s Avid servers so that we’d be able to replicate them successfully.

We then set about building the replica setup at our Farnham base, with the system including a 6 x Chassis Avid Nexis, a Clustered Avid Interplay, a Clustered Media Central, dual DNS servers, dual Media Indexers, and a set of Transfer Servers to deal with the incoming/outgoing side of ITV Creative’s workflow.

Once this had been built and the appropriate checks performed, we transferred the installation into the existing comms room at ITV South Bank. After a period of isolated testing and a huge amount of data transfer from the outgoing setup onto our interim system, the new installation was proved to work. We then spent a weekend setting up all 30+ laptop clients to migrate onto the new build, ensuring ITV’s old workflows were still working to go live seamlessly the next day.

Over the May Bank Holiday, we then moved onto the next stage, which was to decommission and remove the system from South Bank and reinstall it at the new Gray’s Inn Road location. We left having integrated it perfectly into the new infrastructure on site, leaving ITV Creative with a cutting-edge solution fit for the duration of their stay in Holborn.

The Outcome:

We can’t put it any better than ITV Creative’s Systems Specialist, Jonathan Darby:

“Just a quick note to thank Hyperactive for your endeavour over the ITV Creative move project.
